Presently we are working on the project COM-PAR, Communication and Civic Involvement in South-Eastern Europe, financed by
Euroregional Center for Democracy and the Romanian Ministry of Youth. This project intends to stimulate the communication
between young people in South Eastern Europe and to encourage the citizenship responsibility and voluntarism of the
South Eastern youth as an important contribution to the development of an open society. In this part of the world citizens,
especially the young ones, have to redefine their roles under democracy.
By initiating contacts between the target-groups in the countries referred to this project is trying to establish new ways
of communication within European youth to prevent the misunderstandings which could lead to violent conflicts. In societies
recently released from dictatorship we are trying to find out if young people are aware of their rights and if these rights
are respected by application of questionnaires within the participant countries, on the following subjects:
- the level of civic involvement of the target-group
- the level of awareness concerning the rights of the child and whether these rights are respected or not.
Democratic media, as an important part of the civil society, should be a form of education and not only of entertainment
especially as far as youth is concerned. That is why editing a quarterly journal on the subject of civic involvement in
the languages of the target group and publishing an English version on Internet is one of our most important goals.
The rights of the child are frequently violated or ignored in many parts of the world. The first step to avoid abuse is
to make children and adolescents aware of their rights and responsibilities as members of a democratic society. Summer
schools on the rights of the child is our way to diminish abuse.
The results of our work will be published in a volume containing all the data obtained by the team project during the
activities. Our intention and our hope regarding the outcomes of this project is to improve the civic involvement of
young people, to encourage communication between different communities and to guide and inspire others so the concept
of open society to become reality.
